Preventing Sensitivity

Learn How to Manage and Treat Sensitive Teeth

If your teeth are sensitive, there are several simple but important steps you can take today to treat sensitive teeth.

  • Practice good oral hygiene, including proper brushing and flossing, to prevent conditions such as periodontal disease, which can cause receding gums.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne - recommended to help relieve sensitive teeth.
  • Don't brush too hard or more frequently than your dentist recommends.
  • Use a softer toothbrush, preferably one suitable for people with sensitive teeth.
  • Take care while consuming acidic foods that can wear away tooth enamel, such as fruit juices, wine, vinegar salad dressings and soft drinks.
  • Use fluoridated dental products, including toothpaste and mouthrinse, to help strengthen enamel.
  • Avoid grinding your teeth or clenching during the day. Ask your dentist about a mouth guard for nighttime use.
  • See your dentist regularly for professional tooth cleaning, dental care recommendations and advice on treating your sensitive teeth.

How Sensodyne Works

Sensodyne toothpastes work in one of three ways to relieve the pain of sensitive teeth. This depends on the product's active ingredient, which is either Potassium Nitrate or, for Sensodyne Rapid Action, Strontium Acetate, or for Sensodyne Repair & Protect, patented NovaMin® technology.

Potassium Nitrate

The potassium ion in Sensodyne formulas surrounds the nerve and crosses the membrane, which depolarizes the nerve and protects it from firing. This means nerve transmission of nerve impulses from the brain is prevented and the resulting pain is stopped.

Clinical studies show potassium nitrate progressively reduces the pain of sensitivity over a period of weeks. As long as Sensodyne is used twice daily in brushing, the nerve response will gradually be blocked and pain is relieved.

Strontium Acetate

Sensodyne Rapid Action contains strontium acetate, which is an element similar to calcium.

The strontium in Sensodyne Rapid Action replaces some of the calcium lost from the dentine and blocks the exposed tubules within the dentinal tissue. This prevents the flow of the fluid within the tubules that would otherwise cause tooth pain.

NovaMin® Technology

Sensodyne Repair & Protect contains advanced, patented NovaMin® technology, which is scientifically proven to repair sensitive teeth by forming a tooth-like layer over exposed dentine to help continually repair* and protect sensitive areas. It actually seeks out and repairs vulnerable areas that cause the occasional twinges of sensitivity.
